New Year's Holidays
This gallery captures a lively holiday session on the West Coast in early 2026. The waves were big, blue, and curling perfectly, drawing surfers from Australia and across New Zealand—many returning after years away from these breaks. The water was crowded, the energy was electric, and excitement was everywhere as friends and visitors shared rides and celebrated the sheer thrill of the ocean. These images capture the motion, intensity, and joy of a day when the waves brought people together, creating unforgettable moments on and off the surf.

New Zealand Surfers - Kahuna Boardrider's Club
Along the rugged, exposed West Coast of New Zealand lie a handful of surf spots cherished by locals, including the Cobden breakwater at the mouth of the Grey River.
Several times a year, a welcoming group of local surfers opens the breakwater to friendly competition. The first summer event of 2025 arrived amid rough weather, but every participant proved to be a champion, tackling the conditions with skill and spirit.
Club Ladder Contest - Round 1 (22 Nov 2025)
If you participated in the event but don't see yourself in this collection, try looking in the "rough draft" gallery. These images are not processed, but I've included more participants.
